The name “Lore” tells our story. Our mission is to provide a platform for the indigenous people of Central and South America to showcase their unique handcrafted work. Their artistry tells the stories of their culture and history that have been passed down through generations.
The profits will be distributed
back to the tribes when possible
We have a wide range of handcrafts from the indigenous people of the rainforests of Panama and Colombia up through the Andes of Ecuador. You will see the beautiful handcrafted artistry passed down for centuries. We have Molas of the Guna, the Masks of the Embera and Tigua, sculpures of the Narino and handbags of the Shigra to name a few.
The Embera are indigenous people of the Darien region in Panama. They live as they did thousands of years ago off the grid and nourished from the land and river. The work you will see at Lore comes from a small tribe of 7 families. You must travel by canoe to enjoy their hospitality and visit their market.
We feature a selection of these one of a kind masks made from the Chunga tree.. the bark is stripped , sun dried and dyed with various seeds and plants found in nature.
Using the same technique as the masks these bowls are works of art. Some taking several weeks or months to produce. The range of quality will be seen in the tightness of the weave. Some of the highest quality baskets can range in the thousands of dollars.
The Guna tribe is located in the San Blas archipelago of Panama. They are known for their clothing ..a mix of colorful fabrics and patterns. Their main art is called Molas.
These beautiful Molas were originally painted on the body. Now they are created by layering colored pieces of cloth and then meticulously cut into beautiful patterns. Each is unique and tells a cultural or mythical story. The most traditional design will be a geometric pattern.
Peguche Bags are crafted by 2 artisans. Alonsito, for over 60 yrs, is in charge of dying and weaving the wool using a foot pedal loom.The Andean strap is handwoven by the Tontaquima family preserving the intricate techniques of their ancestors.
Hand carved from pine wood, these masks are made by 4th generation Tigua painters, a small indigenous community in the Ecuadorian Andes. Tigua artist use natural pigments and detailed brushstrokes to create these beautiful pieces of art. Each mask depicts the life, myths and landscape of the region.
Our pewter serving dishes and utensils are handcrafted by artisans from the city of Quito. they are adorned with tagua nut found in the coastal region..known as "vegetable ivory".
Shigra Bags were originally designed to carry seeds and plants. Historians say these bags were also used as units of measurement based on the size. A 60cm Shigra of seed could plant an acre of land. Today they are a versatile accessory for any occasion
These ceramic bowls are made by the women of the Amazon in El Puyo. Shaped by hand from the clay of the riverbed and fired in open wood pits. Each bowl depicts the region's biodiversity and ancestral symbols preserving the rich cultural of the Amazonian region.
